Hey there everybody. I'm making a post here on the off chance that any of you get cards graded for any games you collect. This topic has to do with a current event in the Magic the Gathering world, and a pretty serious one as far as authenticity goes. So if anyone isn't familiar with graded cards, there are primarily two different services that people use. Beckett Grading Services (BGS), and Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) are the two services that people typically go to when it comes to getting cards graded for authenticity and condition.
There's a pretty serious event that happened in the Magic the Gathering community recently relating to BGS. A card called Mox Pearl sold on eBay for $2,075 back in March of this year, which is a very standard price for this card. This card has been deemed to be altered, which can mean a number of things - cut edge, cleaned, sharpie to cover up any whiting. BGS however put this card in a slab regardless, with a label and a serial number that reads AUTHENTIC ALTERED. PSA will not slab a card they deem altered, and will send it back to you clarifying this as their reason that they rejected it. The problem with this specific card is that although BGS rejected to grade this card, they still labeled it as authentic. This card is altered, because it's a counterfeit. youtu.be/7OIt-Eppt_g?t=295
A big difference between BGS and PSA is that BGS will not hold any responsibility for them grading counterfeit cards. If PSA grades a counterfeit card, and it's found out, they will provide you a cash amount equal to the market price of the card. Now this is a very rare circumstance, and typically when it comes to Yu Yu Hakusho you have very few people who get cards graded, and I don't believe there were ever any counterfeits circulated. But I imagine there's at least a few of us here who have involved themselves with Pokemon, or Magic the Gathering over the years, and this information may give you second thoughts about choosing to grade cards with BGS or PSA.
